The Amigos of the Cuban Heritage Collection hosted a reception at Books & Books last night for the presentation of Cuba Then, a book of rare and vintage images of Cuba from the collection of Ramiro A Fernandez with poetry by Richard Blanco. Ramiro is a longtime donor to CHC of almost 900 items including photographs, postcards, posters, and books. We have digitized over 400 of his photographs: http://merrick.library.miami.edu/cubanHeritage/chc5260/.

CHC’s Amigos welcome CABA to commemorate El Dia del Abogado

The event honored past presidents of CABA, including Mario Goderich, Osvaldo Soto, and Jose Villalobos, pictured here with Gina Beovides and current CABA president Sandra Ferrara.

The Cuban American Bar Association (CABA) and the Amigos of the Cuban Heritage Collection came together in the Goizueta Pavilion on June 6 to commemorate “El Día del Abogado,” or Lawyer’s Day, historically celebrated in Cuba on June 8. Co-sponsored by BB&T, the event honored past presidents of CABA, including Mario Goderich, Osvaldo Soto, and José Villalobos.  For the occasion, we organized an exhibition that takes a historical look at the law and its practitioners in Cuba and exile. It will be on display through the summer.

Watch a short message from Amigos Chair Aldo Leiva

The Amigos of the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami Libraries are a group of volunteers who came together in 1995 to support the work of the great staff of the Cuban Heritage Collection. We have helped identify donations of materials, fund acquisitions, digitize resources, and fund fellowships for students conducting research in the Collection. As Chair of the Board of Directors of the Amigos, I invite to you renew your membership or join today.

The Cuban Heritage Collection is not just a repository warehousing books and magazines. It’s a forward-thinking, proven cultural institution that is committed to collecting, preserving, and providing on-demand access to its materials to scholars from anywhere in the world, whether they are visiting the Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion in person or using its vast collections of online digital resources. With your Amigos membership, you will support the staffing, acquisition, digitization, and use of this world-class Collection. It’s a matter of getting involved, putting your name down so you can be counted upon, and whatever amount you can contribute and however generous you can be, it all goes to a noble purpose. Your membership gift will be your way of ensuring that the history and culture of Cuba and its diaspora will endure for generations.

Please send your completed membership form with a check or your credit card information to the address included on the form. Memberships start at just $50 for one year. You can visit our website for more information. And I would be happy to answer any questions – just write to me at amigos@miami.edu or call 305-284-4008.

Wishing you a happy holiday season,

Aldo Leiva, Esq.

Among the notable materials acquired with Amigos funding are the Gastón Baquero Papers and library, 19th century editions of the Guía de forasteros de la siempre fiel Isla de Cuba, Medicina homeopática doméstica by J. H. Pulte (1859), and an 1894 lithograph of the city Havana map by D. Rius.
