Introduction
The University of Miami Libraries Education and Outreach unit’s outreach program consists of an active array of activities. These include close collaborations with faculty and graduate students as well as initiatives aimed at the undergraduate students. Our goal is to effectively increase awareness of our broad range of services among University of Miami faculty, students, and staff while also extending our outreach efforts to remote users. Our outreach program encourages collaborative work among University of Miami Libraries’ faculty and staff, Library units, and other university departments to situate the library in university-wide initiatives and to promote awareness of library resources and services. We also find new ways of reaching patrons, including digital reference, online instructional aides, and interactive subject guides.

Outreach to Faculty
We focus our outreach to faculty by:

  • welcoming new faculty at the beginning of each semester. Our New Facutly Reception allows new faculty to learn about our many library services and to meet with their specific subject specialist liaison librarian.
  • building on established rapport with all faculty members.
  • forming new lines of communication with faculty members.

Outreach to Academic Departments and Programs
Our outreach program connects academic departments with the Library. Each academic department has their own subject specialist liaison librarian. Along with our course-related instruction sessions and library workshops, we offer a number of information sessions to various departments and programs.¬†Furthermore, Education and Outreach librarians participate in the teaching and learning activities associated with the Libraries’ Faculty Exploratory.

Outreach to Students
We offer a number of workshops and tours throughout the semester. Librarians also work with student organizations, the Writing Center, and residential life in order to provide tailored and unique lectures and demonstrations. In addition to connecting with students in course-related instruction sessions, librarians are also available for personal, one-on-one research consultations.
