The University of Miami Libraries seeks nominations and applications for an innovative Librarian in the Education and Outreach department of the Otto G. Richter Library.  The Education and Outreach Librarian act as liaison and subject specialist for departments primarily in Nursing, Health Studies, Biology and Chemistry. The Librarian specializes in information literacy, outreach, collection development, departmental liaison activities, and information, technology and research assistance for the University community in assigned subjects and areas of responsibility.

THE LIBRARY: The University of Miami Libraries (www.library.miami.edu) rank among the top 50 research libraries in North America with a collection of over 3 million volumes, 74,000 current serials, and over 64,000 E-journal titles. The Otto G. Richter Library lies in the heart of the Coral Gables campus and serves as the central library for the University. Other University of Miami libraries include the Paul Buisson Architecture Library, the Judi Prokop Newman Business Information Resource Center, and the Marta & Austin Weeks Music Library, and the Marine and Atmospheric Science Library. The campus also has independent medical and law libraries.  The Libraries provide support and services for approximately 10,100 undergraduates, 5,100 graduate students, and 10,000 full and part time faculty and staff. The Libraries have a staff of 37 Librarians and 86 support staff and are a member of ARL, ASERL, CLIR, NERL, RLG, and Lyrasis.

POSITIONReporting to the Head of Education and Outreach, the Education and Outreach Librarian is the liaison and subject specialist to the School of Nursing and Health Studies and the Departments of Biology and Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Librarian is responsible for outreach, collection development, departmental liaison activities, technology and research support for the University community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  1. Develop outreach activities to promote library programming, resources and services.
  2. Communicate effectively with University of Miami faculty, students, staff and administrators.
  3. As liaison for faculty and students in designated departments should meet the expectations of the faculty and students as well as promote services and resources of the University of Miami Libraries.
  4. Develop resources and maintain a substantial schedule of classes, consultations and workshops in real and virtual environments to provide multiple opportunities for teaching critical information literacy skills and library resources.
  5. Provide subject based consultations and develop and revise web pages in support of a department and subject area.
  6. Work collaboratively with library faculty and staff to develop, provide and evaluate information, technology, research, and instruction assistance geared towards faculty, and the interests and learning styles of today’s students during scheduled hours which include nights and weekends.
  7. Select, assess, and manage collections and resources in designated subject areas.
  8. Monitor budgets and make collections decisions to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of the University community.
  9. Supervise or direct library and student assistants.
  10. Keep abreast of relevant literature and studies for current awareness of trends, developments, and best practices in librarianship, information technology, instructional technology, and scholarly communication, with particular emphasis on information and reference service, information literacy and instruction, collection development, and assigned subjects and disciplines.


  1. Network, collaborate and actively participate in local, regional, national, or international organizations regarding information and reference service, information literacy and instruction, collection development, and/or assigned subjects and disciplines.
  2. Represent and promote the University of Miami Libraries in local, state-wide, regional, national, or international organizations as appropriate.
  3. Serve on/participate in University organizations, committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate.
  4. Serve on library committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate.


  1. ALA accredited master’s degree or equivalent.
  2. One year of academic or special library work experience.
  3. Educational background in nursing and/or life sciences is preferred.
  4. Experience using health-related information resources.
  5. Familiarity with teaching methods such as active, competency-based and problem-based learning.
  6. Knowledge of and interest in emerging technologies.
  7. Ability to assist and instruct users and students in specialized resources.
  8. Superb interpersonal and communication skills.
  9. Commitment to user-centered library service and the promotion of information literacy.
  10. Ability to work independently and in teams in a dynamic changing environment.
  11. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  12. Ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse population.
  13. A commitment to the importance of excellence in teaching and scholarship.
  14. The ability to work collaboratively and effectively with staff, faculty, and University administration.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a non-tenure track faculty appointment at the Librarian Assistant/ Associate Professor rank.
