Learning Commons Consultation Zone – Space Use Policy


Purpose

To ensure that all members of the University of Miami community have convenient access to walk-in and scheduled consultations in the Learning Commons’ Consultation Zone.

 Scope

Learning Commons’ Consultation Zone, Richter Library, first floor, including Flexible Program Spaces A & B (rms. 102A & 102B), and Learning Commons Lab (rm. 122).

 Policy

  • The Learning Commons’ Consultation Zone offers priority access to patrons who have scheduled or walk-in appointments to receive services and the staff members providing those services.  Patrons without appointments are welcome to study at empty tables when not in use but will be asked to move when consultation space is needed.

 Definitions

  • Patrons are current students, faculty, staff, and others, as indicated on this access and borrowing list.
  • Learning Commons Consultation Zone is located on the first floor of Richter Library (facing Cox Science Building), including all worktables, chairs, lounge chairs, laptop tables, group tables, and chairs, Flexible Program Space A (rm. 102A), Flexible Program Space B (rm. 102B), and Learning Commons Lab (rm. 122).
  • Learning Commons Employees include undergraduate, graduate, and faculty consultants and tutors who staff:
    • Camner Center for Academic Resources
    • Digital Scholars’ Lab
    • Writing Center
    • Math Lab
    • Modern Languages Lab
    • Peer Research Consultants
    • Technology Assistance Program
    • Toppel Career Center Peer Advising

 Procedure

  • Learning Commons employees are available to answer questions and provide assistance at the Consultation Zone Service point.
  • When using the Learning Commons’ Consultation Zone, students are expected to be respectful of others and accountable for their own behavior (see Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook).
  • If necessary, students who are using the space without scheduled or walk-in appointments will be asked to relocate to another study space.
  • All patrons are expected to abide by the noise and courtesy policy. Conversations should be conducted in a way that is not disruptive to others in the immediate vicinity and placing cell phones on silent or vibrate mode.
  • Patrons who attend virtual consultations through Zoom or any other online meeting software are expected to adhere to the same standards of behavior that they follow in real, in-person consultations.
  • Patrons are provided with an opportunity to submit comments and suggestions through an online form available here.
