PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Student Assistants perform various shelf-maintenance tasks intended to provide consistent and uninterrupted service to library patrons. Student Assistants provide high-level customer service to the patrons of the Richter Library

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Front Desk customer service (40%)

  • Check-in and check-out library materials using library software
  • Assist patrons in locating materials in the online catalog
  • Collect and process fines and fees
  • Provide customer service over the telephone
  • Enforce library entrance and ID policies
  • Direct patrons to the appropriate locations/departments within the library
  • Answer general questions regarding Richter Library and the UM campus
  • Accept lost and found items and store according to library policy
  • Place items on hold for patrons and retrieve held items for check-out
  • Search for course reserves

Shelf-Maintenance (40%)

  • Empty book drops
  • Pick up library materials after in-house use
  • Sort books into specific order
  • Shift books from one shelf to another or between floors
  • Maintain neatness and order of library collections
  • Scan barcodes of library materials
  • Search library catalog/database
  • Measuring and tabulating linear feet of books/shelves
  • Change status codes in item records in library database

Other (20%)

  • Scan in and double-check returned items
  • Reshelve DVDs
  • Assist with the training of other student assistants
  • Help in the sorting room as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Arrange furniture used by patrons in public areas
  • Provide assistance to patrons in finding library materials
  • Assist with the training of other student assistants
  • Erect and break down shelving and other equipment as needed
  • Perform minor “facilities” work (e.g. drilling, hanging, screwing, lubricating, etc.) as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

    • SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports to the Stacks Supervisor or Circulation Manager. Additional supervision will given by staff who are responsible for desk operations.  It requires the ability to be given a set of tasks to be accomplished on regular basis (daily, weekly, biweekly) and to accomplish them with reasonable supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS (education, Experience, Skills, Training, etc.)

    • Pushing a wheeled book truck weighing up to 500 lbs
    • Repetitive lifting of up to 25 lbs
    • Repetitive bending and stretching
    • Standing and walking
    • Dusty conditions
    • Medium lighting

Cuban Heritage Collection Student Assistants

Hours: 10-20 hours per week, Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Responsibilities

    • Collections processing: supporting routine processing of library and archival materials (e.g., books, periodicals, manuscript collections, photographs, audiovisual materials, etc.) to include re-housing and labeling containers, creating inventories, classifying materials, inputting data, labeling containers and related tasks.
    • Supporting research services: paging and re-shelving materials, making photocopies, etc.
    • Clerical support: faxing, answering phones, filing, and data entry.
    • Special projects: exhibitions, digital collections, etc. as assigned.

 


ILL Borrowing Student Assistant / ILL Lending Student Assistant

Work schedule: 2-6 hours/day, 20 hours a week between 9:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday

Duties of position:

Processes materials received from lending libraries, prepares materials for delivery to patrons, and shelves materials in Circulation area.

Pickup materials (returns) left in Circulation area by patrons, processes and prepares materials to be shipped to lending libraries.

Packs and Ships materials to other libraries following specialized instructions for various means of delivery such as DLLI (courier), Lanter, FEDEX, USPS, and International.

Filing required when checking out materials to patrons and pulling signature slip when processing returns.

Skills required for the position:

  • Strong computer skills, familiarity with Windows

  • Be able to lift 20 pounds and push 50 + pounds

Metadata & Discovery Services Student Assistant (Distinctive Collections)

Hours: Student workers work anytime from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday thru Friday in 301 Richter Library. We will hire FWS or non-FWS students.

The student worker will be participating in a range of tasks like locating and barcoding materials in library stacks, receiving new library materials, identifying and exporting appropriate records into the online catalog, providing call number labels for new library materials, providing final editing of the catalog record, and assisting with special projects. Additionally, the student worker may be assigned other database maintenance tasks such as creating minimal level records for the catalog, updating catalog records with new information, or withdrawing materials from the collection. The student worker will work under the supervision of the Unit Lead for Digital & Distinctive Collections. Students will receive training in search techniques and basic copy cataloging policies and procedures from full time staff members.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Locating materials in the stacks and applying barcodes.
  • Create item records in the online catalog, providing accurate data on each book by assigning a barcode, identifying location.
  • Searching the OCLC database for appropriate cataloging records and exporting/overlaying those records into the library’s online catalog.
  • Adding or canceling library holdings in the OCLC database accordingly.
  • Participating in ongoing special projects related to database maintenance and quality control activities.
  • May need to edit records to transfer older materials from library stacks to off-site location.
  • Withdrawing materials from the library collection and editing records in the library catalog and the OCLC database accordingly.
  • Performing additional related duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Bilingual (English & Spanish)

Student Technology and Computer Assistant

Under the direction of the Systems Support Manager, the Student Assistant will work with and assists the Systems Support team with event setup and support to the UM Libraries faculty, staff and patron/end-user community.  This position involves assisting library technology support with assessing A/V needs, coordinating equipment deployment and use, troubleshooting and repairing problems relating to hardware components and A/V software applications in the Richter Library and its branch library locations. Other responsibilities include assisting the Systems Support Team in supporting patrons in the Information Commons on an as needed bases, the computers in the Information Commons and any facet of the digital media projects, Communications projects, events and other duties as assigned.

Assist Manager and Team with microcomputer operations technical support services to library patrons at the Library Systems helpdesk (60%). 

  • Responds to in-person or virtual requests for assistance by library faculty/staff experiencing technical problems utilizing microcomputers
  • Troubleshoot technical problems, identify and implement solutions to resolve such problems.
  • Assist in monitoring the performance of the library’s network and other computer equipment.
  • Installs hardware/software within Richter Library and its branches.
  • Performs emergency systems diagnostics after system failures.
  • May work as field technician and/or help with technical support desk advising branch libraries

Assist Manager and A/V Technician with Library Special Events and Multimedia Support (40%)

  • Work on events, including classroom support as assigned
  • Set up and test all equipment for any given event while communicating and coordinating with all parties involved.
  • Offer support for the length of the event while troubleshooting any issues that may arise.
  • Report all successes and issues to the Systems Support Manager as well as offer any suggestions for future improvements.
  • Analyze and suggest to the Systems Support Manager any equipment or operation changes to better support events.

Job Requirements

  • Monitors and reports on room, equipment and service usage to Systems Support Manager.
  • Must be a current University of Miami undergraduate or graduate student
  • Strong technical aptitude with the ability to work independently, as a part of a team, and within established policies and procedures.
  • Basic network and computer troubleshooting (Mac and PC)
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Must have the ability to perform duties based on given directions, with little to no supervision

Digital Initiatives Lab Student Assistant

Purpose of Position: Assist in the digitization of archival collections to add to the digital collection while adhering to proper handling guidelines for rare and delicate materials.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Digitize various media types to archival standards, while adhering to proper handling guidelines for rare and delicate materials.

  • Edit digitized files to correct for:
    • Cropping to DIL standards
    • Correct orientation
    • Color fidelity
    • Audio and video fidelity (for multimedia projects)
  • Performing file management on digitized files to account for:
    • All relevant materials have been scanned exactly once (no duplication or skipped pages).
    • Files are named according to DIL file naming conventions.
    • Finished files are stored on regularly backed up network drives or on the archival server.
    • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Competencies Expected:

  • Familiarity with various digital file formats such as tiff, jpeg, pdf, crw, mp4, etc.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Premiere Pro preferred. Training will also be provided.
  • Excellent perception of color and value.
