Library Laptop Lending Program
Purpose
To offer Dell and Mac laptops for loan to UM students, faculty, and staff of the University of Miami.
Policy
The Library Laptop Lending Program offers Dell and Mac laptops to UM students, faculty, and staff of the University of Miami on a first-come/first-served basis. The laptop kits include a power cord and mouse. Depending on the operating system, the laptops come installed with standard productivity software [MS Office Suite, Mac software, and internet browsers]. All equipment borrowed will be the borrower’s responsibility until it is returned to the Richter Library Access Services Desk.
Visitors are not allowed to check out laptops*
Definitions
- One Week Laptops are for one week, with one renewal possible at the Access Services Desk.
- 24 hour-Loan Laptops are available without renewal at the Access Services Desk.
Procedure
- A patron borrowing a laptop is required to present a Cane Card at the Access Services Desk.
- At checkout, the laptop will be inspected by a circulation staff member (or a student worker) to ensure it is intact and functioning correctly.
- The patron will be cautioned to save their files in their personal storage device or to send them via an email attachment. All files will be erased when the computer is shut down or restarted.
- The laptop will be checked out to the patron’s UM Library account.
Fines
- Laptop: $9/day
- Laptop kit: $1/day
- After the due date, the patron will be charged a $10/day fine total ($9 / laptop + $1 / kit) to their library account.
- After 14 days overdue:
- The patron’s library account will be blocked,
- The laptop will be marked as lost.
- The laptop will be remotely locked and will no longer be usable.
Lost & damaged items.
- Any items designated as lost will be charged to the patron’s account as follows.
- Laptop: $1600
- Laptop cord: $100
- Lost laptops are recorded on the patron’s library account. Until the equipment is returned or fines are paid for, delinquent patrons are subject to library borrowing restrictions and hold on course registration. This registration hold will prevent you from using any services related to registering for the following semester or obtaining grades or diplomas.
