8th Floor Special Collections and University Archives

The entire 8th floor houses both the Special Collections and University Archives departments and contains several multifunctional facilities, such as our reading room, the librarian and archivist offices, a processing area for incoming materials, and various storage rooms and stacks that are off-limits to non-staff members. To find us, simply take the stacks elevator on the 2nd floor of the Otto G. Richter Library all the way up to the 8th Floor.

Brockway Storage Facility

Located on the first floor, this area contains many books, archival materials, and periodicals that are accessible only by staff members. Everything kept inside is well-preserved in an organized, regulated, and air-conditioned environment that is subject to multiple inspections throughout the year. To view any materials stored here, please request them at the 8th Floor reference desk.

Reference Desk

Reading Room

This area is primarily reserved for teachers, students, staff members, and outside researchers who are interested in looking at materials from our collections. We ask that all visitors adhere to the Special Collections rules while in the reading room and to please leave the area clean and orderly. Students are allowed to use the Reading Room as a general study space, but they must also follow the Special Collections rules.

Event Space

Events are regularly hosted up here in the Special Collections Department year-round. We convert our reading room into a small auditorium to allow for ample seating room for those interested in coming to listen to our many prolific and accomplished guest speakers. All announcements for upcoming events will be delivered through the library’s events page and sent out through our mailing list.

Class Visits & Tours

To encourage University of Miami’s professors and student body to come access our materials more frequently, we are always ready and willing to loan out our space for all kinds of classes. We invite professors to consider bringing their students here to come and view our vast collections, and we are always eager to put together various displays to suit each class topic. Furthermore, we invite outside visitors to visit us as well and would gladly assist in coordinating tour groups to get a glimpse of our hidden treasures. More information on how to arrange for class visits and tours can be found here.

Exhibit Cases

The 8th Floor exhibit cases host various miniature exhibitions throughout the year that everyone is welcome to come observe and photograph. The cases are all situated around the 8th floor and follow a unified theme, which generally highlight some of our biggest collections, showcase the works of UM students, or serve as companion pieces for our events.
