The Digital Initiatives department at the University of Miami contributes to making the Libraries’ resources more accessible through digitization in support of scholarship, research, and teaching.
The Digital Initiatives department digitizes materials held by the University of Miami Libraries for digital collections projects and exhibits, as well as upon request from the University community and beyond. The department works with a range of formats including print and visual resources, audio, and video recordings. We also manage selected born digital library resources, such as new and recent oral history recordings.
Department members collaborate with librarians and staff across departments to:
- Organize and initiate digitization projects
- Digitize, manage, preserve, and maintain digital files
- Develop policies relating to digitization and digital collections
- Coordinate with vendors on outsourced digitization projects
- Create metadata for digital collections
- Apply appropriate copyright statements to Digital Collections materials
- Publish digital content online, including on our Digital Collections website and on University of Miami Mediaspace
- Consult with colleagues and community members on digitization planning and project management
Digital Initiatives works with all library materials, with an emphasis on distinctive and unique collections and materials held in the Cuban Heritage Collection, Special Collections, and University Archives, as well as our subject specialty libraries including the Architecture Research Center, the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science Library, and the Marta and Austin Weeks Music Library.
